[NEW] Substitute for Lead in Infantry Ammunition (SLIA)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project aims to examine whether alternative materials can be used as a substitute for lead in ammunition projectiles and what effects this could have on target ballistics.

OBJECTIVES/PRODUCTS

Considering the REACh Regulation and further discussions within the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the goal of the project is to reduce the use of lead in ammunition and promote a safer environment, by:

• Investigating the use of lead in ammunition in handgun ammunition, as well as in fishing, and propose restrictions where necessary.
• Developing a restriction proposal that includes the sale and use of lead gunshot, and the use of lead in bullets and other projectiles.
• Considering the potential indirect impact on the supply of lead ammunition for military and other non-civilian uses, despite exemptions allowed by EU Member States.
